Energy Efficient Appliances Rebates

Recovery Act Provisions:

-  $300 million for appliance rebates nationwide

-  Incentives for recycling old appliances

__________________________

The Recovery Act included a $300 million provision providing for rebates to individuals who replace their existing appliances with energy efficient models, and the program includes increased amounts for those who trade in their old “clunkers”. With Texas getting just over $23 million for the program, the rebates and the amount of energy saved will be significant. The federal government estimates that an ENERGY STAR clotheswasher can save up to $135 per year due to lowered utility usage, while an efficient refrigerator can save up to $55 per year.

Eligible appliances for Texas’ program include both of those items as well as air conditioners, dishwashers, hot water heaters, and more.

To take advantage of the rebates:

1) Reserve a rebate prior to the start of the program on April 16, 2010

The Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program will run from April 16, 2010 to April 25, 2010, and consumers wishing to participate will have to reserve an appliance rebate by calling a toll-free number or registering online approximately two weeks prior to April 16. The program has been planned for the spring of 2010 in order to allow retailers to prepare their stocks, but consumers can sign up with the State Energy Conservation Office to receive email updates and reminders about the program.

2) During the program period, purchase an eligible ENERGY STAR appliance to replace your current model

3) Send in your rebate and recycle your old appliance
